Should you let your teen run your social media campaign?

What has become pretty clear as many messages are disseminated over Twitter, Facebook and Instagram is that social media marketing can be just as important as traditional marketing methods. Since creating (and maintaining) a brand is important to the growth of a small business, driving traffic and interest is of the utmost importance.

What many entrepreneurs may fail to realize is that marketing is not just a part-time job, and that an expert is needed in order to make things work. But for those entrepreneurs on a shoestring budget, is a full-time social media marketer realistic? For those who know that they cannot afford one, they may rely on their teenage kids for advice.

Is this good for your business? Here are a few things to consider.

Know your audience - While teens may be well-versed with navigating SnapChat, Instagram and other social media platforms, they are generally posting duck face selfies and silly videos. This does not make them knowledgeable of a sophisticated audience.

Know the costs – Indeed, the prospect of having free (or next to free) labor by consulting your kids may be tempting, but as we alluded to earlier, the expertise of an experienced consultant is invaluable. So while a consultant may be expensive right now, it could prove to be a worthy expense as your business grows.

Know the law – Also, a professional consultant will know whether particular pictures may be used without royalty fees, while your teen may unwittingly use images that could get your business into trouble.
